When I was working on the design of the layout and reading a plethora of articles on anything model railroad related, I found an article on superelevation by Michael Highsmith. Since my minimum radius in only 24" I was concerned about how much superelevation to introduce. I decided on half of what was used an an example in the article.
Three scale inches is 7 layers of 1/2" masking tape. Now, 3 scale inches may seem hardly worth doing, but getting eye-level with the track and rolling a test car around the bend looked sweet! Just enough rake to simulate the mass of locomotives and rolling stock. Since I want to do a lot of photography with the layout, this is the look I was going for.
