Company House No. 1

January 17, 2017

Before deciding on a layout plan, I wanted to start by trying my hand at craftsman structure building. If I had success with a small kit, maybe I could tackle a medium-sized layout. I took a trip to Tommy Gilbert’s hobby shop and spent an hour walking the isles … learning. I left with a small $36 laser-cut “Company House”, some modeling sand paper, X-Acto blades and Basic Structure Modeling by Jeff Wilson.

After some research and reading about methods of painting and weathering wood kits, I began bracing the walls to prevent warping of the wood.

Then, I applied an isopropyl alcohol + india ink stain (made famous by George Sellios) which slightly ages the wood. After a drying period, I mixed some FolkArt acrylic paints and ended up with a nice yellow color. I tested the wash and the paint on a small scrap piece before applying it to the walls.
